The fire chief later told me gasoline residue had been found around the porch.
Not an electrical fault.
Not a chimney problem.
Not lightning.
Arson.
Karen crossed her arms.
“You can’t prove it was me.”
I had not accused her.
Not yet.
“I didn’t say it was.”
She looked toward the ruins.
“So you’re going to rebuild that eyesore?”
I stared at the cottage.
At the solar frame twisted by heat.
At Rusty sitting beside me with his ears flat.
Then I looked at Karen.
“No.”
Her mouth curled.
For one second she thought she had won.
“I’ve got other plans.”
The sheriff and fire marshal were already investigating.
I made two additional calls.
First, my attorney.
Second, the county water board.
Decades earlier, when the entire area was ranchland, the local water provider had installed a private distribution main across what was now my acreage to serve the tract that eventually became Sycamore Lakes.
