“That’s what Karen said.”
“I believed her.”
“I know.”
She looked toward Sycamore Lakes.
No HOA sign anymore.
Just neighborhood entry markers.
“You could have turned it back on.”
“Yes.”
“Do you ever regret not doing that?”
Hard question.
I thought.
“I regret that families suffered.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“No.”
I looked toward the old valve area.
“If I had reopened it without forcing the easement problem to be resolved, everybody would’ve gone back to pretending it wasn’t a problem.”
She nodded.
“Probably.”
“That doesn’t mean I enjoyed it.”
“I know that now.”
There it was.
Know now.
So much of the story came down to information arriving late.
Residents learned late I was outside the HOA.
Late the easement had expired.
Late Karen was suspected in the fire.
Late Gregory’s board was financially compromised.
Late the charter renewal had been missed.
