HOA RULES.
“Thanks,” he said.
Then ran.
I kept the page.
It still sits above my desk.
Next to the unsigned note somebody once tucked beneath my gate.
Sometimes it takes fire to burn away the rot.
I never liked that wording.
Fire had almost killed me.
There is nothing cleansing about waking up choking.
Nothing symbolic about carrying a terrified dog through smoke.
Nothing poetic about losing tools, photographs, books, a bed, the chair you drank coffee in, the cedar boards you installed yourself.

Fire-resistant siding.
Improved detection.
Better camera coverage.

I did not rebuild larger to prove anything.
I rebuilt what I wanted in the first place.
A quiet home.
The neighborhood changed too.
Not because flames purified it.
Because residents finally saw records.
Votes.
Money.
