Would this become one of those embarrassing family stories that people brought up years later?
By breakfast, Emily had convinced herself that the situation had become much bigger than it actually was.
Her mother placed a cup of coffee on the table.
“Can we talk?” she asked.
Emily stared at her plate.
“Please don’t,” Emily whispered.
Her mother sat across from her.
“I’m not here to embarrass you.”
Emily finally looked up.
“I know.”
“I was surprised,” her mother continued. “But you’re an adult. I also need you to understand that this is our home, and there are certain boundaries when you’re living under your parents’ roof.”
Emily nodded.
The conversation wasn’t comfortable, but it was calmer than she expected.
Her mother explained that privacy was important, but so were honesty and respect. She didn’t ask for unnecessary details. She didn’t threaten Emily. She simply wanted them to establish clearer expectations.
