I kept holding the lumber I had been measuring.
“No.”
“The new structure exceeds the permitted height for residential construction within Sycamore Lakes.”
“I’m not in Sycamore Lakes.”
“The architectural review committee has concerns.”
“I’m sure it does.”
“Perhaps scaling the roofline down would show good faith.”
“Toward who?”
“The community.”
“The community burned my previous house?”
He stiffened.
“That is under investigation.”
“Karen is under arrest.”
“Karen is not the board.”
“Good.”
I set the lumber down.
“Then you should stop behaving like her.”
He glanced toward Rusty.
Rusty sat behind the temporary construction fence staring at him.
Gregory gathered his clipboard.
“This hostility doesn’t help anyone.”
“Neither does inventing jurisdiction.”
He left.
That evening, somebody tried to reach the old water-valve housing.
The bypass had not been completed yet.
Emergency tanks still supplied Sycamore Lakes.
The old line remained physically in place, but locked and isolated according to the county-approved shutdown.
