I never expected my life to change in a hospital waiting room, much less to marry a stranger there. Yet after meeting Trevor during one of the hardest nights of my life, we made an impulsive decision that neither of us believed would last. One week later, his lawyer arrived at my door carrying Trevor’s backpack. He said Trevor had wanted me to know the truth. I didn’t understand until I saw what was inside. There were documents, messages, and a canceled San Diego plane ticket.
The ticket had been purchased for Trevor and his children, but Eli, his nine-year-old son, had been deliberately left behind. Then I found messages Eli had sent me, cheerfully insisting that he had eaten and everything was fine. The truth was much darker. Trevor had apparently coached him to lie while he spent days mostly caring for himself. Then I noticed a handwritten note that Harper, Trevor’s ten-year-old daughter, had discovered on the refrigerator.
The note was brutally simple. It reminded Trevor that Eli would stay behind while he told everyone he was visiting a friend. Harper had found it after Trevor returned from San Diego with suitcases and souvenirs. When she understood what it meant, she broke down crying. Her father had told both children that Eli was staying somewhere safely, but the note proved that wasn’t true. Harper realized her stepbrother had been intentionally left behind while everyone else went on the family trip. She also realized that her father had lied to her.
