Curry possessed a rare ability to make a character unforgettable.
His most famous role was undoubtedly Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the 1975 musical film that eventually became one of the most celebrated cult movies in cinema history.
But his career went far beyond that single performance.
He appeared in productions including It, Clue, Annie, Legend, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Muppet Treasure Island.
Television audiences also knew Curry from his work in miniseries, animated programs and voice acting.
His Career Began on the Stage
Before becoming internationally recognized on screen, Curry established himself as a stage performer.
He began his professional career in London’s theater scene, including an appearance in the original London production of Hair in 1968.
His theatrical background became one of the defining features of his acting style. Curry could combine comedy, drama, music and flamboyant physical performance in a way few performers could match.

For another generation, Curry was remembered for something completely different.
In the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It, he portrayed Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
The performance became one of television horror’s most recognizable portrayals.
Curry’s Pennywise was unsettling not simply because of makeup or special effects, but because of the actor’s ability to shift between humor, charm and menace.
Years later, the performance remained a reference point whenever audiences discussed famous screen versions of the character.
A Voice That Reached Younger Generations
Curry’s influence also extended into animation.
He voiced Sir Nigel Thornberry, the eccentric father in Nickelodeon’s The Wild Thornberrys. The animated series introduced his distinctive voice and comedic timing to an entirely new generation.
