I sank onto the wooden chest, holding the photograph against my chest as heavy, quiet tears streamed down my face. The twenty years of silent grief, unanswered questions, and endless agony didn’t instantly disappear, but in a single moment, the darkness lifted.
I looked back at the small yellow teddy bear sitting beside the open chest. I gently picked it up, placed it inside my purse along with the plane ticket, and walked back out toward my car.
The cool night air felt different now—no longer cold and hollow, but full of promise. The long, painful wait was finally over, and a new journey was about to begin.
