“I pay our household bills.”
“The truck needed work.”
“You spent more than a thousand dollars and never mentioned it?”
“It’s my money too.”
“Then why hide it?”
He looked away.
“I’m not doing anything that hurts this family.”
“Then tell me what you’re doing.”
“I can’t.”
The answer escaped before he could catch it.
I stared at him.
“You can’t?”
“I meant there’s nothing to tell.”
“Those are completely different answers.”
“I’ll replace the money.”
I stood.
“Your location disappears whenever you leave.”
I counted on my fingers.
“You changed your phone password.”
“Somebody is texting you saying she refuses to stay your secret.”
“And now money is disappearing.”
“Keep your voice down.”
“The boys are asleep.”
“I don’t want them waking up.”
“And I don’t want you using them every time you need this conversation to stop.”
Ethan shut the laptop.
