Emma watched him.
“She made it?”
“Yes.”
A long pause.
Then Emma asked, “Can I come?”
Caleb looked at her.
“You sure?”
“No.”
She stood anyway.
“But I want to.”
They drove back mostly in silence.
Not brother and sister yet.
Not strangers either.
Something suspended between both.
When they entered the hospital room, their mother looked pale and exhausted.
She saw Caleb first.
Then Emma.
Her face emptied of color.
“Emma…”
Emma stopped at the foot of the bed.
“You don’t get to hide anymore.”
Tears filled their mother’s eyes.
“I know.”
“You knew where I was?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“For years?”
“Yes.”
Emma’s jaw trembled.
“You watched me?”
Their mother closed her eyes.
“Sometimes.”
“But you never came.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Their mother began crying.
“Because every year I waited made me more ashamed of the year before.”
Emma looked away.
“That’s a terrible reason.”
“I know.”
Silence filled the room.
Caleb stood between them and understood there was nothing he could repair in that moment.
Then Emma stepped closer.
“I was angry at you for a long time.”
“You should be.”
“I’m still angry.”
“I understand.”
Emma reached the bedside.
“But I came.”
Their mother looked at her.
Slowly, carefully, she extended one hand.
Emma stared at it for several seconds.
Then took it.
Their mother broke.
Not gracefully.
Not quietly.
Decades of guilt seemed to collapse through her all at once.
Caleb turned away for a moment because watching felt too intimate.
Months passed.
Nothing became perfect.
Emma did not suddenly forgive everything.
Their mother did not stop feeling ashamed.
Caleb had his own anger to work through.
There were arguments.
Long silences.
Questions that received answers nobody liked.
Some weeks Emma called.
Some weeks she didn’t.
But slowly, awkwardly, something new began.
Dinner.
Then another.
A birthday.
An old photograph passed across a table.
Stories exchanged.
Details compared.
Caleb learned Emma hated olives.
Emma learned Caleb still slept with the television on during thunderstorms.
Their mother listened to both of them talk and sometimes cried without explanation.
