CHAPTER 2: THE CALL ON THE TERRACE
On Monitor Nine, the camera mounted beneath the carved limestone molding of the south terrace captured what happened next.
Chloe didn’t look at the girls. She didn’t look at Marisol.
She pulled an un-indexed matte-black burner phone from the pocket of her tailored ivory cashmere trousers, clicked speed-dial, and lifted it to her ear.
She walked past the double French doors out onto the travertine terrace overlooking the infinity pool, her voice carrying clearly through the parabolic sensor:
“He’s in the air,” Chloe said.
There was no warmth. No cultivated lilt. It was the flat, transactional tone of an operative confirming a perimeter breach:
“The pilot logged the departure code at Van Nuys forty minutes ago. The transponder is squawking north toward Calgary.”
She paused, listening to the caller on the encrypted line. A razor-thin smile sliced across her porcelain face:
“The housekeeper took the bait. She laid hands on me in front of the kids. I have the security guard in my pocket to wipe the cloud buffers, and the domestic violence petition is already signed by Judge Sterling’s clerk.”
A cold, electrical jolt tore through my spine:
*Judge Sterling.*
Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance.
The presiding patriarch of the Vance-Sterling dynasty.
My estranged uncle.
The man who had tried to seize my father’s commercial maritime holdings in nineteen-eighty-four; the man who had contested my mother’s probate charter until a naval chancery court had permanently barred him from the family trusts.
Chloe tapped her manicured nails against the limestone balustrade:
*tack-tack-tack.*
“Arthur,” Chloe purred into the receiver:
“The equity transfer documents for **Conduit Ten** are inside Alexander’s home vault behind the grandfather clock in the library.”
“The biometric scanner is keyed to his retinas, but his power of attorney assigns secondary operational proxy to his lawful spouse upon an active domestic incapacitation filing.”
“The moment the sheriff’s deputies pull Marisol out of this house in chains, I will file the emergency conservatorship order.”
“Alexander’s private jet won’t touch down in Toronto.”
“The flight crew has their orders.”
“When the pressurization valve fails over the Canadian Rockies… the children become wards of the surviving fiancée.”
“And the sovereign deed to Conduit Ten… transfers to **The Valkyrie Trust** in Zurich before the New York financial markets open at eight tomorrow morning.”
