The Woman on Crutches
A young woman entered.
She was on crutches.
Her leg was in a cast.
Everyone turned toward her.
“Who are you?” the judge demanded.
The woman looked directly at the parents.
“My name is Ashley Rodriguez.”
The parents went completely pale.
Ashley continued.
“I used to live with them.”
The judge frowned.
“Explain.”
“I was their foster daughter.”
The courtroom became silent.
Ashley reached into her bag.
“I have evidence.”
She handed the judge her phone.
The judge watched the screen.
At first, her expression was annoyed.
Then confused.
Then shocked.
Finally, furious.
“What is this?” she asked.
“A recording,” Ashley said.
“A recording of what?”
“What really happened.”
The Video
The video had been recorded from a building across the street.
The timestamp showed it had been filmed shortly before the baby fell.
On the screen, the father appeared beside the open window.
He looked down toward the street.
“There he is,” he said.
The mother walked over.
“That's the man?”
“Yes.”
“The one who walks underneath every afternoon?”
“Yes.”
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“We can make money from this.”
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
The mother on the video was holding the baby.
The father continued talking.
They discussed their debts.
They discussed the possibility of a lawsuit.
Then the mother looked down.
“He's underneath us.”
She moved closer to the window.
The courtroom became completely silent.
Then the video showed what had actually happened.
The parents had deliberately placed the baby in danger.
They had planned for someone below to catch him.
They wanted the child injured badly enough to create the basis for a lawsuit.
And I had been their target.
The baby fell.
I caught him.
Exactly as they had planned.
But the injuries weren't caused by me.
They were the result of the fall they had deliberately created.
