Colorado Supreme Court Blocks Democrat Redistricting Push

The current dispute emerged because some Democrats wanted Colorado to reconsider that system in response to redistricting actions in Republican-controlled states. They argued that if other states were changing maps to gain political advantages, Colorado should not remain restricted by a process that prevented similar strategic action.

Opponents viewed that argument differently. They argued that Colorado’s independent system was created specifically to prevent partisan mapmaking and that changing the rules whenever political circumstances shifted would weaken the purpose of the commission.

The Proposed Ballot Measures

The rejected proposals were designed to allow voters to approve new congressional maps for future elections. Democratic-backed organizers argued that the measures would give Colorado an opportunity to adjust its congressional districts and respond to national redistricting developments.

The proposals were part of a larger national struggle over congressional control. Both major parties have increasingly focused on redistricting as a way to influence the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.
