Stay on designated trails and boardwalks.
Do not step over railings.
Do not walk around barriers.
Do not leave the trail because you see a shortcut.
Do not approach a thermal feature simply because the ground looks solid.
And never allow a desire for a closer photograph to override the posted safety instructions.
The boardwalk provides a designated route through areas where the natural ground may be unstable or dangerous.
Following it is one of the easiest ways to dramatically reduce your risk.
Keep Children Close
Children can be particularly vulnerable around thermal areas.
A child may not understand why a beautiful pool is dangerous.
They may want to touch the water.
They may run toward an interesting feature.
They may become distracted by steam, colors, wildlife, or other visitors.
Parents and caregivers should therefore keep children close and explain the rules before entering a geothermal area.
