At Yellowstone, you should never test the water of a thermal feature.
Not with your hand.
Not with your foot.
Not with a stick.
And certainly not by entering the pool.
The temperature may be dangerously high, and the surrounding ground may be unstable.
Stay on the designated boardwalk.
Keep children and pets under control.
Respect barriers.
Follow park instructions.
And never attempt an improvised rescue by entering a thermal feature yourself.
Yellowstone is extraordinary precisely because it gives us a glimpse of powerful geological forces that are still active today.
We don't need to touch that power to appreciate it.
Sometimes the safest distance is also the best viewpoint.
The next time you stand beside one of Yellowstone's spectacular hot springs, remember that the beautiful water is not an invitation.
It is a reminder of the incredible — and sometimes dangerous — forces beneath the surface.
Look.
Learn.
Take the photograph.
